Italy is widely regarded as one of the best countries in the world for travelers with celiac disease. National rules on celiac care, monthly gluten-free food allowances for diagnosed residents, and the strong advocacy of the Associazione Italiana Celiachia (AIC) mean Italian food culture treats celiac disease seriously.

From dedicated gluten-free beachfront hotels like Hotel Fenice to the many gelaterias, pizzerias and trattorias in the AIC's network, Italy is one of the easiest places to eat out as a celiac. You still need to ask questions, but you'll rarely be met with a blank look.

The AIC (Associazione Italiana Celiachia) Network

The AIC is Italy's national celiac association, and its restaurant program is one of the most respected in Europe.

  • The network (Alimentazione Fuori Casa, AFC): The AIC trains staff at member restaurants, hotels and gelaterias and checks that they follow its gluten-free rules, including the under-20 ppm threshold for gluten-free food.
  • The app: The AIC's official app lists network venues across Italian cities and towns. Download it before you travel.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I find gluten-free pizza and pasta everywhere in Italy?

In most towns, yes. Many Italian restaurants, pizzerias and gelaterias offer gluten-free pasta and pizza, often cooked in separate pans or ovens. Venues in the AIC network are the safest bet. Elsewhere, ask how the gluten-free pizza is baked, because some places use the same oven as regular pizza.
